Miami International Airport (MIA) and the Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) are the two main airports in Miami. MIA is located just 6 miles west of Downtown andFLL is roughly 30 miles north of Miami.
Taxis- Taxis can be found lined up outside the terminals waiting for passengers. Taxicab drivers will sometimes ask you where your destination is before agreeing to take you. Rates are standardized rates and flat-fares established for certain destination zones. For other areas, they charge $6.90 for the first mile (including an airport fee) and $2.40 for each additional mile. A taxi Downtown should cost just over $20.
Super Shuttle- Following the signs pointing to “Ground Transportation,” exit the baggage claim area on the ground level. Super Shuttles are available in the ‘Ground Transportation’ area 24 hours per day. Super Shuttle employee wears a gold shirt or blue jacket. You are charged by distance and per person. The Super Shuttle can be less expensive than a taxi for a party of 1 or 2 people. Your journey may take long though because of other passenger drop offs. Fairs do not include tips but do cover tolls.
Metrorail is a rail system that has one elevated line running from Hialeah through Downtown Miami and south to Kendall/Dadeland. Trains run every five to 15 minutes from 6am to midnight. The fare is $1.50, or 75¢ with a Metromover transfer.
The Metrobus departs from the Ground Level across from Concourse E at Miami International Airport. Bus numbers are as follows: Downtown Miami: #7 Bus, Coral Gables and South Miami: #37 Bus (Southbound), Coconut Grove: #42 Bus, Miami Beach: “J” Bus, South Beach: “J” Bus, then transfer to Southbound “H” Bus at 41st Street. Use the Airport Owl Shuttle for Late-Night Arrivals. This shuttle runs a loop through South Beach, Downtown, and back to the airport and departs every hour, daily, from 11:50 pm to 5:40 am at a cost of $1.25.
Car - Follow any Interstate to I-95 south, which will take you directly into Downtown Miami. Getting to Miami from New York for example is 19-hour trip without stops. Please be aware that speed limits change from state to state.Rush hour traffic in Miami is from 7am to 9am and 4pm to 6pm weekdays, as well as congested traffic along Collins Ave and Ocean Dr during high season and especially on weekends.
Boat- Cruise Ships arrive at Port of Miami known as the ‘cruise capital of the world.’ The Port is located on the edge of Downtown Miami; taxis and public buses to other local points are available from nearby Biscayne Blvd.
Train- Amtrak is the main Miami terminal and connects the Miami to the rest of continental USA and Canada. A train ticket from New York to Miami will cost just under one hundred dollars one way and takes up to 30 hours.
The Metromover bus, monorail and train system is your link to getting around the Downtown area. The one- and two-car, rubber-wheeled, computer-controlled vehicles operate on three lines on two elevated-track ‘loops, ’ covering Downtown as far south as the Financial District Station of Brickell Ave and as far north as the School Board Station up on NW 15th St and NE 1st Ave. You can transfer to the Metrorail at Government Center.
